Sommer (aka Katniss), who knew that 35 years ago when your Dad and I hiked some of these mountains, I was exactly your age and now here I am sharing the incredible experience of hiking the entire AT with you! I can’t express how much this journey has meant to me. It’s been such a delight to be with you through this, not as your parent, but as your hiking partner, and to face each new experience of this adventure together.
I’ve seen you as you’ve grown up but it’s especially rewarding to be with you now as a grown woman. There’s a quiet confidence about you and it shines through when you are here in the outdoors. You have a light inside you that draws others in. After the Four State Challenge, (which I’m still in awe over), you had so many folks rooting for you, everyone anxious to hear your story and share in the experience. It was so inspiring and your enthusiasm for life is contagious!!
Seeing you in your element, doing what you love, being who you are…I’m filled with pride and happiness for the wonderful person you are. The little girl in that picture had nothing on you. You’ve just helped her grow stronger, more resilient, caring and spirited…in ways she never thought possible.
Daring young lady, keep your inner fire and there’s nothing you can’t do! Here’s to the second half of our “saunter” to Katahdin, let’s savor each remaining step and may the odds be ever in our favor!!
I love you lil Ol…Happy, Happy Birthday!!❤️🌻❤️
