On Top of Old Smoky

Entering Smoky Mountain National Park

Since our last update we have passed the 200 mile mark of our journey and also entered into Tennessee, our third state!! Karen joined us at Nantahala and quickly adopted the name Peeps. This was in large part due to the fact that her husband Lou managed to hide some Easter peeps in her already loaded pack. But the name stuck when her very first trail magic experience was from two trail angels named Chapstick and Visor who bestowed us with none other than Peeps for the coming Easter weekend.

The great Peep caper
Peep trail magic!!!

Aside from having Karen join our adventure, we were reunited with many of our old “tramily” members, many of which we hadn’t seen in over a week.

Reunion at Nantahala

There have been many arduous climbs but the reward has been worth it with incredible vistas as far as the eyes can see. After leaving Nantahala we submitted Cheoah Bald and a few days later Clingmans Dome, the highest peak on the entire Appalachian Trail at 6643 feet in elevation.

And we continue to be blessed with great weather. Yes, there have been a few rainy days, but just enough to test our mettle but not break our spirits. We opted to begin our hike into the Smoky Mtns amid a rain storm but were able to dry out over the next few sunny days. And we all know Katniss LOVES the rain, she apparently loves snails too and adopted them all along the way.

The journey continues to be pretty magical. We have only few more days in the Smokys then on to Hot Springs. I’d be lying if if didn’t admit there are tough days but on balance this has been an inspiring and simple journey that allows you to be at peace with yourself and the world. I’m surprised every day by the basic kindness of people we’ve met all along the way and impressed by the fortitude that every person brings with them on this journey. And with that I’ll leave you with a few more images worth sharing.

Sadly, today is Karen’s last day on the trail, she’s been an incredible hiking partner and it’s been an absolute blast! Hope you are well. I don’t think at this point my legs even remember how to cycle.

Love that y’all are having such a great time and seeing so many amazing things! Keep it up! Joe just got back from a week in NYC for work and ran the Brooklyn bridge a few times. It has been crazy warm here (close to 90f)… And the amount of pollen is insane; hope you all aren’t becoming a yellow powdered donut out on the trail. Keep the updates coming!

    Love,

    Tracy and Joe
